Kitesurfing

UPDATE (August 9, 2004): I just had my first kitesurfing lesson yesterday. Boy was that a great experience! I cannot communicate just how exhilerating it is to be dragged through the water by a large kite. I think that I made some pretty good progress. I actually got in the water and was able to do some body-drags in the surf for a mile or two down the coast (the jog back was not a bad training exercise either!). I was only using a 8 meter Peter Lynn Arc twinskin kite but that produced enough power to get my body planing on the top of the water for a little bit of the time. I have not involved any board in the equation yet since I am still working on controlling and creating power with the kite. I am taking my lessons from Rich Menna at Malibu Kitesurfing here in the area. I will post more after my second lesson this next weekend. If Claudia is able to go with me this week, I may have some photos to post after the next session.
ORIGINAL POST: I started on this kitesurfing thing by accident. I bought a small parafoil stunt kit that came with an introductory video on kitesurfing. After watching the video I thought "This is for me!". I then bought a 4.4 square meter Cabrinha black-tip kitesurfing kite on ebay and started practicing.
I recently went to the beach with my neighbor, Juan Carlos Cruz (who, by the way, has his own show on the Food network) to fly my new traction kite for the first time. As you can see from the following pictures, even my small kite generates quite a bit of power that dragged me across the beach.

Check out the following photos to see a little bit more of the Southern California beach and a tiny bit about the sport of kitesurfing.
